We want to write this one lightly and we are finding it slightly harder than usual to keep it light.

The interest has changed shape. It started as a faceless email and a big number, the sort of thing any project that makes a noise attracts. But it has become more particular. The questions in the inbox are better informed than they should be. Someone asked about a capability we have mentioned to precisely no one outside this room. And — yes, we can hear how this sounds — there has been a car. Parked, unremarkable, across from the good-sandwich-shaped hole in our week, for longer than a parked car usually is.

It is almost certainly nothing. We are four sleep-deprived people who have spent six months thinking about the porousness of reality, which is not a state of mind that produces calm assessments of ordinary traffic. We know that. We are writing it down anyway, because this is a diary and the diary is supposed to hold the real texture of it, and the real texture this week has an edge on it that it did not have in the spring. Probably paranoia. Probably.
