The first formal approach

The Recovery Log — 037
Sunday 12 July 2026

The car we were probably imagining has been replaced by something we are definitely not imagining, which is a letter.

Polite. Well-spaced. A request — not a demand, they are far too careful for a demand — for a meeting, at our convenience, to "discuss the potential applications of your methods and how we might support the work." No product mentioned. No number this time. The support is the ask; the meeting is the ask; the specifics are conspicuously absent, in the way specifics are absent when someone already knows more than they are putting in writing.

We keep finding reasons to defer, and we have started to notice that deferring is a skill, and that we are getting better at it, and that getting better at it is not the same as it going away. Whoever this is does not appear to be in a hurry, which is somehow worse than urgency. We are recovering music from the subtext of our own culture. We did not expect the subtext of our own culture to write back on letterhead. We have not agreed to the meeting. That is all we are prepared to say, and we are aware that "that is all we are prepared to say" is a sentence we did not used to write.
