Still not answering the letter

The Recovery Log — 048
Thursday 27 August 2026

We assumed, naively, that going public would defuse the letters — that a thing everyone can see is a thing no one needs to quietly acquire. The opposite has happened. The interest has not gone away; it has got better informed.

This week's message referenced the surge. Not the record — the mechanism. Someone outside this room wanted to understand how we recover a signal that registers a presence the source world treats as real, and whether that recovery is, in their careful phrasing, "generalisable to other classes of signal." We have written before about the thing we proved once and unreliably — that the method is not, at bottom, about music. That sentence has clearly travelled further than the room it was written in. The people writing to us are not asking about songs.

We have still not agreed to the meeting. We are aware that we have now declined, deferred, or ignored every approach for two and a half months, and that this is a policy we never actually decided on so much as backed into. We do not know how it ends. We only know that the safest thing we can do with a capability people want for reasons they will not put in writing is to keep it exactly as public, and exactly as musical, as it already is. So: more recoveries. Louder, not quieter. That remains the plan, such as it is.
