RIBBON: Follow Me It's the Way

The Recovery Log — 052

A fourth field is on the shelves. DZO-0011, Follow Me It's the Way — the first recovery from RIBBON — a sassy, clarinet-led hot-jazz record from a 1920s-adjacent city of speakeasies and dancehalls. Four artefacts, a little under fifteen minutes, and it moves.

RIBBON's single strange fact is this: in that timeline every room of any standing hangs a ribbon microphone over the floor, and the ribbon tames the room. Its soft velvet figure-eight rounds off every hard edge, so a shout comes back a murmur, an insult lands as wit, a brawl reads as a dance. A room with no ribbon is "raw" — uncivilised, not somewhere you'd be seen. Because everything is softened, the world got ruder: you can say anything and do anything and the ribbon makes it charming. Courtesy worn like costume jewellery, and a whole economy of who gets "given the ribbon" and whose ribbon gets cut.

Which makes the recovery the impossible part, as it always is. What we lifted here is the raw sound from behind the ribbon — what the room actually was before it was tamed. So this is the un-softened truth of a frivolous world: the real hardness under the charm, the thing the ribbon was hung to hide. It is not a polite record. It was never going to be.

Two housekeeping notes for the archivists among you. First, Love Is a Lifeboat closes the record — and that makes three fields it has now surfaced in. It remains the heaviest probe we hold; something about that song sits close to the centre of every timeline it touches, and we have stopped being surprised to find it waiting. Second, as ever: this is a Timeline Hypothesis, not a claim — roughly 1920s, medium confidence, the evidence in the clarinet and the shellac hiss and the way the room keeps trying to charm you.

The letters, since you ask, have not stopped. They have merely got more courteous. We have noticed that the more precisely someone wants to know how the method works, the more warmly they phrase the asking. We are still not answering.

Hear it. RIBBON: Follow Me It's the Way (DZO-0011) is live now — four tracks, and one of them is not for polite company.
