Alt Oakland won't stabilise
The Recovery Log — 035
Friday 3 July 2026
There is a third DEEPWELL field, and we are not releasing it, and the not is the whole story.
We are calling it, for now, Alt Oakland — DZO-0003. It is real; the probe opens a genuine neighbourhood; there is clearly something there. But it will not stabilise. Run it one night and the field coheres; run it the next and the edges crawl, the coherence score wobbles, artefacts that corroborated each other on Tuesday drift apart by Thursday. Somewhere in it is a scene we can almost hold. We cannot yet hold it steadily enough to put our name on it.
So we are doing the thing the retraction taught us we are allowed to do: we are leaving it open. Marked restricted, coming soon, a real active recovery rather than a blank page or a broken promise. It connects to things already surfaced in the first two collections; we can feel where it wants to sit. But "we can feel it" is not the standard. The standard is that it holds when you are not wishing at it. Until Alt Oakland does that, it stays exactly where it is: in the archive, unfinished, honestly labelled.
